The Project The proposed 55 story incinerator, at an estimated cost of $450 million, would burn 3,000 tons of
trash daily and generate 465 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year. It would be located in an area zoned for industrial purposes and owned by the city, conditions that often tend to facilitate the siting process.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard, previously a shipbuilding and repair yard, became an industrial park since the city government purchased it in the mid-1960s. The project site
is along the waterfront (northward to Greenpoint), next to Con Edison's
Hudson Avenue plant, which would purchase the energy generated, and have direct access to the East River. The proposed project would cover 13 acres of land (of the 263 acres industrial park complex). It would be adjacent to a residential communities, with the Williamsburg neighborhood closest to the project site. |
