Course objectives

Students will be introduced to the research process for developing business plans, and learn to use a wide range of print and electronic information resources.

Outline of weekly topics

  1. Basic Search Strategies
    • Searching the Web (Boolean logic, keywords, phrases)
    • Searching library databases (fields, records, abstracts, articles)

  2. Industry Analysis

  3. Market Trends

  4. Competitive Landscape

  5. Information Management
    • Evaluating and citing resources
    • Ethical use of sources

Evaluation

Students will work in groups to research an assigned business opportunity, and complete a preliminary assessment of its viability.
