Industry Data Sources: Government
The U.S.
Government agency responsible for collecting and publishing the bulk of
industry
statistics is the U.S. Census Bureau, a division of the Commerce
Department. Every five years (years ending in 2 and 7), a comprehensive
Economic Census is conducted to gather details about
economic activity by sector and by state. In the intervening years, the
Census Bureau conducts Annual Surveys of a sample of corporations. NAICS
is being used for the first time for reports from the 1997 Economic
Census, and reports will continue to be released until the 2002 Economic
Census is conducted.
Other U.S. agencies that collect and publish statistical data for industries include the Agricultural Marketing Service and National Agricultural Statistics Service, both of the Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Geological Survey of the Department of the Interior.
