The U.S. Industry and Trade Outlook and the Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys are useful for general overviews of major
industry groups. The latest issues are at the Reference Desk.
Two excellent guides also at the Reference Desk are:
Encyclopedia of American Industries and U.S. Industry
Profiles.
You can then look at Inside U.S. Business: A Concise Encyclopedia
of Leading Industries (REF HC 106.8 .M337 1994) for coverage of 25 industries.
Government Regulations
The Code of Federal Regulations (U.S. Documents Microfiche AE 2.106:) is available at the Dana Library. Start with the annual
CFR Index and Finding Aids volume which sits on top of the
Government Documents microfiche cabinet.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has published a series of reports entitled Sector Notebooks (U.S. Documents EP 1.2:P94/no./) which profile selected industries. Each "notebook" describes the manufacturing process and the environmental impact of those processes. There is also a section summarizing the applicable federal regulations. These Sector Notebooks are also available online from the EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.
There are some industry-specific information sources in the library;
ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.
