Sources of Financial Statements
Annual Reports
Annual reports to shareholders and 10-K reports filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission may be obtained from three primary sources:
- At Dana Library, 10-K reports from 1973-1988 and annual reports to shareholders from 1966-1988 for companies traded on the NYSE and AMEX are available on microfiche.
- The SEC's EDGAR web site contains many kinds of reports for many companies (not all) from 1994 onwards. EDGAR filings are also freely available from the private sector, e.g. via Hoovers Online.
- Many companies now publish their annual report to shareholders on their corporate Website. Look for links to current reports at the Investor Relations Information Network or the Annual Report Gallery. Many more sources of annual reports are listed on the Stock and Commodity Exchanges Research Guide.
"Annual Report Surrogates"
Among the many surrogates or summaries of corporate financial information are these time-tested sources:
- Mergent Online, the electronic version of the Mergent/Moody's Manuals. Dana Library has print volumes from 1901 to present; volumes for the latest year are on Index Table I. (Rutgers-restricted Access) This is probably the best source for company debt and equity issues.
- Value Line Investment Survey. Dana Library has 1966 to present; current issues are at the Reference Desk.
- Compact D/SEC on CD-ROM from Disclosure. Dana Library has 1988 to present; please see a Reference Librarian for details.
