Sources of Information on Legal Proceedings
Annual Reports to the US SEC
Public companies have to file annual reports called 10-K reports
with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. If the company is
involved in any lawsuits, this information will be reported in the
10-K under "Legal Proceedings," usually to be found within the first
six to ten pages.
- At Dana Library, 10-K reports from 1973-1988 are on microfiche.
- The SEC's EDGAR web site contains many kinds of reports (including 10-Ks) for most public companies (not all) from 1994 onwards.
- A more user-friendly EDGAR Website is FreeEDGAR, which will let you view specific sections of SEC filings.
- Many more sources of annual reports are listed on the Stock and Commodity Exchanges Research Guide.
Journal Articles
You can use the
ABI/INFORM database to search for articles on your company. To
locate those dealing with legal proceedings, use the search term
litigation and combine that with your company
name. For example:
