Global Warming and the Amazon: A Case Study in Environmental Global
Governance
Candace Halo
One of the central issues facing human civilization at the end of the
twentieth century is global governance. In a world shrinking because of
technology, boundaries have become more permeable. At every boundary,
there is a dilemma of classification: who or what belongs or each on each
side and who or what rules? Many of the problems that give rise to
questions such as these are transnational and transboundary in nature.
The issue of the environmental controversy over global warming illustrates the proposition. What is the effect, if any, of global warming and what can be done about it? The fate of the Amazon Rain Forest and global climate changes is a case study in global governance. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to clarify the relationship between the history of the Amazon and global climate, examine theories of global warming, and explore the role of environmental global governance as a resolution to the controversy.
