For example, China's claim that Tibet has been a part of China for more than 700 years and that the 'invasion' of 1949 was merely exerting control over a territory that was theirs to begin with. Where, on the other hand Tibetans claim that Tibet has a history dating back over 2000 years and continued to be an independent state. While arguing that China is basing their claim to Tibet on a brief influence of Mongol and Manchuk emperors each exercised in the thirteenth and eighteenth century, respectively, which is absurd.
However, the events that occurred after the 'invasion' of 1949 are what have prompted external interest. Whether China's control over Tibet is justified or not, surely, the deliberate destruction of their Buddhist Monasteries, torture and even murder of people in labor camps are not.
In this paper I would like to examine the issues mentioned above and also look at the United State's role and what steps they have taken and should take in attempts to bring a new peace to these countries and perhaps help bring a solution to this ongoing problem.
