Rutgers: University Library Resources and Services

Overview

Why do I need the library?

Many important publishers, including scholarly presses and producers of periodical indexes, charge dearly for their information resources. The Rutgers University Libraries have purchased these resources so you don't have to. In the following sections, you will discover the range of resources available for your research. These include IRIS, our online catalog; databases for articles and statistical data; and subject-specific research guides. Dana Library on the Newark Campus

Note that everything you need for college-level work isn't on the Internet -- at least not for free. The information on the Internet is uneven in quality of presentation and often lacking in background or context. Sometimes when you are learning about something, it is useful to have the information arranged in a more full or systematic way. Also, the Internet has a short memory -- not much before 1995 or so. You may need older material that is still around in print or some other networked electronic formats.

Before you begin

In order to access restricted online databases from off-campus, you must identify yourself as a Rutgers user by connecting to our website with a Rutgers NetID. If you have a Rutgers NetID and do not remember what it is you may look it up using the NetID Lookup application. If you do not yet have a Rutgers NetID you may Create a RUCS Account and NetID.

You will also need a library barcode and PIN to request or renew books, or place interlibrary loan requests for books and articles. To do so, please Register with the Rutgers Libraries.
