- Consult the multi-volume International Directory of Company Histories (DANA REF HD 2721 .I58) for some historical background on your company. Each profile includes references to other sources of information. You may also want to see the entry for your company in Corporate Affiliations, a veritable "who owns whom" multi-volume directory. (DANA REF INDEX TABLE F)
- Then refer to Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys (DANA Reference Desk) for industry overviews and basic statistics: production, shipment, sales, revenues. You should also consider consulting earlier editions. (DANA Business Reference stacks)
- Five titles with U.S. industry overviews are:
- Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries
- Encyclopedia of American Industries
- Handbook of North American Industry
- U.S. Industry Profiles and

- Use IRIS, our online catalog, to locate books on your company or industry. Note that there are several ways to search, including "Contains" and "Begins with." Books that are not at Dana may be requested from other libraries.
Articles
- To locate articles in general business and economics journals and magazines, use Business Source Premier. Start with "Advanced Search;" enter keywords (e.g.
"globalization OR globalisation OR multinational") and then combine that with an appropriate company or industry name.
- You can also find articles from trade journals with Business & Industry Database. Use the Marketing Term
"Global campaign" and combine that with an appropriate company or industry name. You also wish to try the Concept Term "Foreign business"
- For references to older (1983-1998) articles in business journals, use Business Abstracts. Search with the phrase
"international economic integration" or combine your industry name with the phrase "international aspects". Note that you will only see abstracts of the articles; for the full-text, click on Library Catalog Holdings, which will lead to IRIS, our online catalog, to see if we subscribe to that journal.
- For references to articles in related subjects, e.g. foreign relations, economic relations, and international afairs, use PAIS. Search with the keyword
"globalization" or combine your industry name with the phrase "international aspects". Note that you will only see abstracts of the articles; for the full-text, click on Library Catalog Holdings, which will lead to IRIS, our online catalog, to see if we subscribe to that publication.
- To locate articles in local and national newspapers, use LexisNexis Academic. Start with "Guided News Search" then "General News" (or "World News") and then select "Major Papers" (or News Sources for an appropriate region).
Web Resources
- The Industry Outlook 2005 from BusinessWeek Online is a good starting point for many large industry sectors in the U.S.
- Selected Industries are covered by Accenture, the consulting firm. Resources include case studies and research reports.
- There are Industry Market Reports available for many countries, provided by the U.S. Commerce Department. [Username: rul; Password: Business1]
- The World Trade Organization publishes an annual report on International Trade Statistics, with selected tables by industry sector.
