The state document depository system dates back to 1875, though the modern system dates to 1957 when the law was changed to increase the number of copies of materials to be sent to the State Library from 6 to 25. Thirteen libraries were depositories at this time. During the 1960's more depositories were added, including some from out of state. Soon the demand for documents from libraries around New Jersey meant the all the 25 copies were taken and more were needed. The law was again changed in 1967 increasing the number of copies to be sent to us to 75, the current number. With the current explosion of electronic documents this number will very likely be revised again in the future.

The State Library is also committed to capturing and saving electronic documents and now has a server for the permanent retention of digital documents. As part of our shipping list we will now be notifying depository libraries of digital documents added to our collection.
